Did you know that microbiologists found out that the average family sofa has a bacterial count that’s shockingly 12 times more contaminated than the typical toilet seat?

According to the research of Philip Tierno, Jr., Ph.D., author of the book The Secret Life of Germs, there are probably 200,000 bacteria per square inch on a sofa, which is about 4,000 times dirtier than a regular toilet seat. Some of the germs found in a typical sofa and carpet can cause serious illness towards people who don’t regularly clean their household textiles.

One of the germs found in a regular sofa and carpet is known as Norovirus. Norovirus can cause stomach flu and other digestive problems. It can survive for almost two months and could turn into an airborne illness once someone walks on the carpet or placed their shoulders on the arm sofa. There can be 50 colonies of Acinetobacter Schlinderi hiding in your sofa that can cause life-threatening infections.

Salmonella is also found and can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. This is especially dangerous to young children and elderly adults since they have weak immune system. Salmonella can’t only be found in contaminated food, but also on carpet and bottoms of shoes.

Dust mitesyeasts, and moulds are also found and could be a possible reason for serious health conditions to people. These can worsen the illness of anyone who has a respiratory illness like asthma or lead to different situations like acquiring skin infections and pneumonia. The notorious methicillin-resistant, found in curtains, can bring harmful germs and cause damaging infection if it’s not cleaned properly and left hanging for months.

According to cleaning experts, upholstery cleaning should be done every 6-12 months for both hygienic reasons and appearance. Seeking cleaning experts is the cleverest way of making sure that the unseen dirt and bacteria that have built up in your sofa are regularly cleaned, especially if any member of the family is prone to allergies or asthma.

For carpet cleaning, if carpet owners either have children or pets, it is recommended to have it cleaned every 2-3 months since children or pets might carry germs from playing outside the house that might actually cause dangerous illness.
