Dry Cleaning & Laundry Care Tips

Dry Cleaning & Laundry Care Tips, Dry Cleaning, laundry services

Tips and Advice for your clothing to remove stains, and prevent damage to your garments.

When you are grooming up..
Some people brush their teeth after eating a meal. Be careful of that toothpaste that may
land on your clothing. It causes decolourisation. You may still think that it is the toothpaste
you haven’t removed. And that stain is permanent!

Avoid spraying perfumes and hair products on your clothes. They contain alcohol and certain
chemicals that may affect the dye on the fiber of some fabrics. Removing them can be difficult.

When your garment is stained..
If it is an oil stain, sprinkle some baby powder onto the affected area to soak up the excess oil.
If it is a water stain, use a slightly damp clean cloth and dab on the affected area.

Do not attempt to remove a stain if you are not certain. Stain may worsen.
Do not leave the stain for too long before sending the clothing to us, as the stain may set permanently.

Let us know how you got the stain so as to enable us to determine the right chemicals to remove the stain.

When you don’t know that your garment is stained..
Water contains iron and manganese. They can come from rusty water tank, water heater and
pipes. Detergents, bleaching agents and heat causes oxidation on the iron to produce rust.

When you thought you stained your garment but don’t see it..
If a stain seemed to have disappeared before washing, it may reappear and set if it is heated or ironed over. The heat locks in the stain permanently.

Make sure to treat the stain before putting it in the washer. If it is still there after washing, treat it again with stain remover and a little light scrubbing or dabbing.

If the stain is still there after all this, do take the garment to a professional such as Cotton Care.

Inform us if your garments were in-contact with white wine, soft drinks, sweets and other sugary substances. They are invisible to the human eye.

When you receive your laundry..
Remove the cleaned laundry from the plastic wrappings. Humid weather here may cause
water vapour to condense in them.

Heat, sunlight, moisture and salt are the most common enemies of your garments. Store them in a cool and dry place if you use them infrequently.

To Dry Clean or Launder?

Dry Cleaning, Laundry cleaning

What is Laundry Cleaning and Dry Cleaning?
Dry cleaning is simply to clean without using water. It can be any solvent other than water. Dry cleaning uses perchloroethylene to remove soil and stains from fabric. It is able to dissolve greases and oils and prevents shrinkage, loss of color, and fabric distortion.

The process begins with the pre-treatment of spots and stains using special cleaning agents. The garments are then loaded into a machine and washed with perchloroethylene, then pressed and packaged.

Laundry cleaning (to launder) a garment means to clean it with water and other agents such as soap, detergent or softener.

Some Things You Should Know..

  • Not all materials can be cleaned.
  • Not all that can be cleaned can be dry cleaned.
  • There are various methods of dry cleaning
  • Not all care labels on the garments are 100% reliable.
  • Different materials require different solvents and agents. (Eg. cleaning of rubber, leather and wool are not the same.)
  • Some garments require both laundry cleaning and dry cleaning.
  • Sometimes it is a matter of preference whether to wash or dry clean.

Advantages of Dry Cleaning

  • It reduces shrinkage (esp. for long items like curtains & highly shrinkable materials like wool).
  • It reduces wrinkage (esp. for silk, cotton and linen).
  • It reduces the wear and tear of fabric.
  • It reduces the colour fading and bleeding.
  • It protects the texture of garments.
  • It prolongs the life of garments.

Advantages of Laundering

  • Water is the best solvent for most chemicals and stains, hence cleaning effect is better.
  • Sensitivity to the dry cleaning solution.
  • Washed items smells fresher.
  • It is cheaper to wash.
  • Please Seek Professional Help If..
  • Your garment is strictly for dry cleaning only.
  • You are not sure what material your garment is made of.
  • Your garment is complicated and require different treatment on different parts.
  • Your garment is very delicate.
  • Your garment is bulky and drying is difficult.

Suits should undergo minimal dry cleaning every year if you want to extend its lifespan. Experts suggest dry cleaning your suit once per season.

If you get any stains or spots, you can clean it by hand using a mild detergent and warm water. For wrinkles, stretches and creases, you can buy a steamer. Clothes steamers are very easy to use and they make stretched-out or creased parts regain their natural shape and will make them look good as new.
